How Star Rank Changes Your Best Dragon Formations
Star Rank affects more than a dragon's place on a power list: it can unlock a Habit that changes which allies benefit from that dragon. Compare formations using today's active abilities, then reassess when a meaningful unlock changes the available interactions.
Keep three progression values separate
The official glossary links Star Rank with increased stats and new Habits. In a formation comparison, record Stars separately from Dragon Level and the level of each existing Habit.
| Value | Why to record it |
|---|---|
| Star Rank | Determines whether a reviewed Habit unlock has been reached and contributes to the model's progression estimate. |
| Dragon Level | Is temporary campaign progression. Vanguard unlocks at Level 16 in game; strategic recommendations assume it is available and ignore saved Dragon Levels. |
| Habit level | Describes an existing Habit's progression; supported effects use reviewed level data where available. |
Official support calls the campaign level “Reign Level”: it resets each reign, while Star Rank persists. Wyrmwise plans around persistent Stars and Habits, so a Level reset alone does not change its recommended armies.
A high value in one column does not automatically satisfy a condition in another. A dragon with enough Stars for a Habit still needs that Habit recorded accurately; a higher Star Rank does not activate a level-dependent Vanguard effect by itself.
A new unlock can change the useful partners
The following examples come from Wyrmwise's reviewed community mechanics. They illustrate changes worth checking, not a recommendation to target these upgrades or spend resources in this order.
| Dragon and Habit | Star Rank | Question after the unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Venator: Dragon's Might | 4 | Does the added Physical-damage contribution change which support is useful? |
| Seasmoke: Infectious Wrath | 6 | Can the proposed formation make use of its Panic-related payoff? |
| Malachite: Lightning Strike | 10 | Can an adjacent ally benefit from the reviewed First-Strike effect? |
Before the listed unlock, that specific Habit cannot justify the choice. After it, the dragon deserves a fresh comparison using the rest of your account. A newly available interaction is a possibility, not proof that the old formation is obsolete.
Compare current ability sets, not imagined endgame versions
Suppose one proposed trio relies on Seasmoke's Star-6 Habit but your Seasmoke is Star 5. Label it as a future formation idea. Compare today's alternatives without awarding it that interaction. When the unlock is reached and the Habit is available, run the comparison again.
The same discipline applies when comparing a lower-rarity dragon with a more prestigious one. Do not assume either wins on rarity or Stars alone. Inspect their active jobs, relevant support, troop-affinity options and recorded Habits.
For a developing roster, the F2P and low-Star guide turns this into a practical selection process. It avoids recommending unavailable formations merely because they are popular elsewhere.
One progression change can affect several armies
A new interaction can make a dragon useful beside an ally already assigned to another army. Moving that ally creates a second decision: what replaces it? Check the whole allocation before celebrating an improvement to one trio.
That is why Wyrmwise recalculates from the updated roster. A stronger dragon may remain elsewhere because another army needs it more within the model. Conversely, a newly useful partner may let the old support dragon help a different army.
Record what changed and what the new recommendation gains or gives up. Wyrmwise's estimated strength and relationship scores are model outputs, not official combat values. A small difference should be treated with appropriate caution.
When should you recheck a formation?
- After a relevant Habit unlock or a change to an existing Habit level.
- After acquiring a partner that makes an active interaction usable.
- After reviewed game changes affect an ability used in the formation.
Update the current roster first, then inspect the complete set of armies. For your next upgrades, Wyrmwise Pro offers personalised Habit focus across your roster. Check each supported next-level change alongside its evidence and uncertainty.
