Dragon Placement Guide: Who Goes Left, Centre and Right?

Choose positions from the abilities that are active on your dragons. Check the centre dragon's Vanguard effect, which flank receives support, and any adjacency or recipient conditions. There is no evidence-backed rule that the strongest dragon always belongs in the centre.

Read the three positions as different jobs

The centre slot is called Vanguard in Wyrmwise. Left and right are the formation's flanks. Those labels matter when an ability names a recipient, but they do not mean that every left dragon should be a damage dealer or every centre dragon should be defensive.

Begin with the selected dragons' ability descriptions, not their portraits or power order. Separate effects on the dragon itself from effects on an ally. Then identify whether the ally is selected by position, adjacency, damage type or another condition.

Check whether the Vanguard ability is active

In Wyrmwise's reviewed community evidence, Vanguard effects unlock at Dragon Level 16 and require centre placement in game. Wyrmwise assumes reviewed Vanguard effects are available for strategic formation planning, so a Campaign Reset does not change your recommended roles. Stars and Habit unlocks remain real requirements.

One reviewed example is Seasmoke's Champion's Brilliance: its protection reaches the right-flank ally when the Vanguard conditions are met. If you want that protection on a particular dragon, its position matters. This does not prove Seasmoke should always be your centre dragon; another arrangement may offer a more useful combination of effects.

Check both parts of a Vanguard ability. Some recorded abilities contain a benefit to the centre dragon and a separate benefit to a flank. Moving the dragon can therefore change more than one relationship.

Follow the support to its recipient

Tessarion's Blazing Leader is a useful example of why left and right are not interchangeable: it favours the left flank when selecting an ally for Fire-damage support. This preference is stated in the official guide. It is a preference, not a claim that the ability can only ever target the left.

As a practical starting point, inspect the ally on the left and ask whether its active abilities use Fire damage. If they do not, putting a suitable Fire-damage ally there is an arrangement worth comparing. You must still check the rest of the trio, the Habit unlock and any competing support.

Adjacency is a different condition. Malachite's Lightning Strike has a reviewed adjacent-ally First-Strike effect, available from Star Rank 10 in the community evidence set. Do not assume it can reach an ally across a gap. The guide makes no damage claim for the separate Strength component, which Wyrmwise does not translate into a scored damage benefit.

Compare the six arrangements

You can label a proposed trio A, B and C and check each possible centre with the two flank orders. You do not need to change any dragon to do this comparison.

  1. Choose a centre candidate and verify its level-dependent effect.
  2. Place the intended recipients on the relevant flanks.
  3. Swap the flanks and note which relationships change.
  4. Repeat with the other centre candidates, retaining the same Stars and Habit levels.
  5. Compare the complete formation, including any support lost by moving the original centre.

A useful comparison explains the trade-off: for example, protecting an important ally versus retaining a different offensive benefit. Wyrmwise checks these arrangements within its supported model. Two arrangements may be equally rated; a tie is not a reason to invent a positional advantage.

Common placement mistakes

  • Putting the highest-power dragon in Vanguard without reading the ability.
  • Confusing a Star unlock with the Dragon Level requirement for Vanguard.
  • Treating a preferred recipient as an unconditional guarantee.
  • Assuming that every protection effect covers the whole army.
  • Copying an arrangement whose important Habit is still locked on your account.

If all six arrangements still lack a useful interaction, return to choosing the trio. Placement can connect suitable abilities; it cannot create an ability your dragons do not have.
